Hunger, summary

The text Hunger is a story about a boy how's parents are in a fight. In the end of the fight his father leaves, him, his brother and his mother, and with him goes the money and the food. No one's around to pay any bills and the mother decides to get a job and start making some changes. She tells her children that they need to take more responsibilities and to help her take care of each other, and they do. One day the mother takes her oldest child out to the supermarket and tells him he's the one grocery shopping to the hole family now. She gives him a list, some money and she goes home to wait for him. When he's about to enter the supermarket a gang walk up to him and they beat him and take all the money. He runs home scared but when he arrives his mother rejects him and tells him to go back. She gives him more money a new list and he walks scared back to the supermarket. Yet on more time the gang chases him down and beat him and take all the money. He runs home and to his mother and again she tells him to go back. She give him more money and another list. He cries and tells her that he don't want to go back, that they will beat him even harder and take all the money again. She goes back in and come back with big stick. She tells him to go back and don't come back until he bought all the groceries on the list. You have to learn how to defend yourself she says and shut the door in his face. He walk back to the supermarket and when the gang comes closer to beat him he defends himself. He hits all the kids in the gang and they all run terrified. Just seconds later their parents come out to start yell at him. Then he threaten them and tells them that he'll do what he did to their children to them if they don't leave him alone. He picks up his money, the list and grabs the stick and walks to the supermarket to buy he's groceries.

I read the story and I see what the mother wants to teach her son but I think she does it in the wrong way. She wants to teach her son to defend himself and that you have to take what's rightfully yours but she does it in the wrong way. I think that she could have done it in another way and still taught him the same lesson.
